About the hotel

Located in the heart of Reading town center, just a short walk from Reading train station, our hotel offers an ideal base for both leisure and business travelers looking for hotels in Reading UK with character, comfort, and convenience. Dating back to October 1843, our building holds a unique place in Reading’s literary and cultural history. Once a Literary and Mechanics’ Institute founded by Charles Dickens, then a chapel, a theater, and later The Great Expectations pub, the space has now been lovingly restored into one of the best boutique hotels in Reading. Hotel 1843 features 29 en-suite hotel rooms in Reading designed with both style and comfort in mind. Whether you're seeking a luxury hotel in Reading for a romantic getaway or for a quick business stopover, we have accommodation to suit every traveler. Our on-site restaurant and bar, Calico Bar & Eatery, is one of the top places to eat in Reading, serving a delicious menu that blends modern Asian and world cuisine, using fresh ingredients for every dish. Guests and locals can enjoy all-day dining, private booths, and regular live DJ entertainment from Thursday to Saturday. As one of the few Reading spa hotels with a lively social space, we also offer the perfect setting for birthdays, corporate events, or casual drinks. Our proximity to Forbury Gardens, Reading town center, and the University of Reading makes us a top choice among hotels in Reading city center and hotels near Reading station. We’re also close to key landmarks like The Roseate Reading, and Madejski Stadium, making us ideal for visitors to Reading who want convenience and character in one place.
