Ayia Napa is two places in one. After dark the centre is a loud, neon-lit holiday party. By day, and just beyond the square, it's a coastline of fine white-sand beaches, limestone cliffs, sea caves and water so clear you can count the pebbles.
That mix is the appeal. You can spend the morning on a quiet cove, the afternoon on a boat, and the evening wherever the music is, and every one of those options is a short ride or walk away.
Don't miss
Beaches
The reason most people come.
Nissi Beach
Beach

Photo: Dmitry Panov, CC BY 3.0 The beach that put Ayia Napa on the map: a wide curve of fine white sand with shallow, turquoise water and a small islet just offshore that you can wade out to when the sea is calm. It's lively, with beach bars, water sports and a party feel in high season.
Tip: Come early in summer for the best spot, and take a hat.
Makronissos Beach
Beach

Photo: Marek Ślusarczyk (Tupungato) Photo portfolio, CC BY 3.0 A wide, sandy bay on the western side of town that feels more relaxed than Nissi. The shallow water suits young children, and the cliffs behind hide ancient rock-cut tombs, a nice contrast to a day on the sand.
Konnos Bay
Beach

Photo: dronepicr, CC BY 2.0 A small, sheltered cove on the road towards Protaras, tucked below pine-covered headlands, with clear water that's excellent for snorkelling. Water-sports operators and a beach café are on hand, and it tends to be calmer than the beaches in town.
Fig Tree Bay
Beach

Photo: Gerda Arendt, CC0 In neighbouring Protaras, Fig Tree Bay is a golden-sand beach with calm, shallow water and a small rocky islet. A promenade runs behind it with cafés and shops, a low-key alternative to Ayia Napa's party scene.
Coast and boat trips
Cape Greco and the sea caves
Nature

Photo: kallerna, CC BY-SA 4.0 A national park on the rocky headland just east of town, with sea cliffs, hidden coves, pine scrub and walking trails along the clifftops. The sea caves cut into the rock are best seen from the water, and you'll also find a natural rock arch known as the Love Bridge.
Tip: Walk it in the morning or late afternoon, when it is cooler, and take plenty of water.
Boat cruises
Activity
Boat trips leave Ayia Napa's harbour and run along the coast to the sea caves and Cape Greco, often with stops for swimming and snorkelling. Glass-bottomed boats and party cruises are also on offer, so pick the vibe that suits you.
Ayia Napa harbour
Neighbourhood

Photo: Wojciech Biegun, CC BY-SA 3.0 The little fishing harbour is a handy evening stop: stroll along the waterfront, then pick a taverna for fresh fish at a table with a sea view. It's also the starting point for most boat trips.
Culture and history
Ayia Napa Monastery
Landmark

Photo: Bayreuth2009, CC BY 3.0 The town takes its name from this quiet 16th-century monastery, built under Venetian rule and tucked beside the central square. Step through the gate and the noise falls away. A cool courtyard with a fountain and a lovely stone church make it a calm half-hour.
Tip: Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered.
Ayia Napa Sculpture Park
Museum

Photo: Qasinka, CC0 An open-air gallery on the coast with works by sculptors from many countries, set among rocks and the sea. It's a nice, unexpected stop that's quite different from the usual Ayia Napa day.
Thalassa Museum
Museum
Photo: Claus Ableiter, CC BY-SA 3.0 A small museum on the sea and its history, with displays that tell the story of Cyprus's seafaring past. It's a good stop for a hot afternoon.
Fun and nightlife
Water World
Water park
Ayia Napa's big water park is themed around Greek myths, with slides of all sizes and plenty of pools. It's the go-to family day out when you want a break from the beach.
Tip: Go in the morning and avoid peak midday sun.
The nightlife strip
Nightlife
Around the central square, Bar Street and Nissi Avenue, Ayia Napa turns into one of the Mediterranean's busiest party areas, with beach clubs, big nightclubs, themed bars and DJs. It's loud and unashamedly lively, so book a hotel a few streets back if you want to sleep.
Eat and day trips
Cypriot meze
Food
A meze is the best way to meet the local cooking: a long parade of small dishes including dips, halloumi, grilled meats, salads and fish. Order for the table, let it keep coming, and pace yourself.
Larnaca
Day trip
A short drive west, Larnaca has a palm-lined seafront, the church of Agios Lazaros in the old centre and a fort at the end of the promenade. Its salt lake is a winter home for flamingos. It makes a good, easy contrast to a beach week.

Getting around
The centre, harbour and monastery are walkable, and local buses and taxis link the beaches and neighbouring Protaras. Hire a car or take an excursion if you want to explore Cape Greco, Larnaca or further afield.
When to go
Summer is the party season, with the hottest weather and the busiest beaches. May, June and September are warm and a little calmer, and a lot of the nightlife winds down in the cooler months.
