Where to stay in Ayia Napa: the best areas and hotels

Updated 1 October 2026 · 4 areas · 16 hotels picked

Ayia Napa has two personalities, and both are turned up loud. By night it's the party capital of Cyprus, its square and Bar Street pulsing until the sun comes up. By day it's all about the beaches: white sand, water in impossible shades of turquoise, and the sea caves and cliffs of Cape Greco just east of town.

Small as it is, where you stay changes everything. The centre is for nightlife; the harbour and its beaches are for walking to dinner and sleeping well; Nissi Beach is for families and beach lovers; and Makronissos, on the western edge, is calmer still. Plenty of hotels say plainly who they're for, from couples-only hideaways to adults-only addresses in the middle of the action.

The centre of Ayia Napa is built around a tranquil medieval monastery, which is a fine joke given what happens around it. The square and the streets nearby, including the famous Bar Street, are packed with bars and clubs that build from early evening to well past dawn in high summer, and Nissi Avenue runs west with shops, restaurants and more of the same.

Several hotels here are adults-only and make no secret that they're built for the nightlife: the Senator and Tasia Maris Seasons are a short walk from the clubs, while Napa Plaza is a stylish design hotel in the thick of it. The Nines, a new adults-only five-star near Vathia Gonia beach, is a smarter take. If you want sleep, look elsewhere.

Ayia Napa's fishing harbour is the prettiest corner of town: bobbing boats, seafood tavernas and boat trips out to the sea caves. Around it lie some of the best town beaches, from the Blue Flag sands of Pantachou to the sandy curve of Grecian Bay, all within walking distance of the centre.

This is the sweet spot for couples and first-timers: close enough to dip into the nightlife, far enough to sleep. Grecian Bay is a classic five-star on the sand, Amanti is a couples-only hotel near the harbour, and Alion Beach overlooks the little Limanaki bay. For adults-only at a gentler price, try Tasia Maris Sands on Sandy Bay.

The famous white-sand beach and its tiny islet, lined with family resorts.

Nissi Beach is the reason many people come to Ayia Napa: a crescent of fine white sand, water so clear and shallow it looks like a swimming pool, and a tiny islet you can wade out to across a sandbar. It's busy and lively in peak season, with watersports and beach bars, yet the hotels around the bay feel well removed from the clubs, about 3 km away.

This is family territory. Five-star Adams Beach sits right on the sand with a family-friendly main area, Nissiblu has a spa and indoor and outdoor pools, and the Nissi Beach hotel and bungalows are set in tropical gardens. For value, Nissiana is just 150 m from the beach. Larnaca airport is about 45 km away.

Calm sandy coves and big resorts on the western edge of town.

West of Nissi, the Makronissos peninsula is Ayia Napa at its most relaxed: shallow, sandy bays, ancient rock-cut tombs on the headland and long views back along the coast. WaterWorld, the big water park, is a short drive away, which makes it a hit with families.

Hotels are spread out and self-contained, from Olympic Lagoon's resort pools to the long-standing Dome, set between two shallow bays, and Asterias on Makronissos beach itself. The centre is about 5 km away by local bus or taxi.

Which area?

Here to party? Stay in the centre. Want nightlife on tap but a decent night’s sleep? The harbour. With children, or after the best beach? Nissi Bay or Makronissos. Protaras, just up the coast beyond Cape Greco, is the calmer alternative.

Getting there and around

Larnaca airport is about 45 km away; Paphos is much further. Local buses link the centre, Nissi Beach, Makronissos and Protaras, and quad bikes and scooters are a popular way to explore Cape Greco.

Questions about where to stay in Ayia Napa

What is the best area to stay in Ayia Napa?
It depends on why you are going. Stay in the centre for nightlife, around the harbour for a walkable base with good beaches and better sleep, at Nissi Beach for families and the best sand, or in Makronissos for a quieter resort stay.
Where should families stay in Ayia Napa?
Nissi Bay and Makronissos, both a few kilometres west of the centre. Their beaches are sandy and shallow, the resorts have family facilities, and you are well away from the clubs. Adams Beach, Nissi Beach and Olympic Lagoon are good examples.
Is Ayia Napa good for couples?
Yes, if you pick the right base. The harbour area has the couples-only Amanti and the classic Grecian Bay, and there are several adults-only hotels, including The Nines and Tasia Maris Sands. Avoid the streets around the square if you want quiet nights.
Where is the nightlife in Ayia Napa?
Around the main square and Bar Street in the centre, with more bars along Nissi Avenue. Things get going late and run until dawn in high summer. Adults-only hotels such as the Senator and Tasia Maris Seasons are a short walk away.
Is Ayia Napa or Protaras better?
Ayia Napa has the nightlife and the famous Nissi Beach. Protaras, just up the coast, is quieter and more family-focused, with small, sheltered bays such as Fig Tree Bay. Many visitors stay in one and visit the other.
