Where to stay in Menorca: the best areas and resorts

Menorca is the Balearic island that never got the memo about mass tourism, and is all the better for it. The whole island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, its coast is scalloped with turquoise coves backed by pine trees, and its two towns, Ciutadella and Mahón, sit at either end like rival bookends.

It is small enough to cross in under an hour, so the main decision is coast. The south has the famous sandy coves and family resorts; the north is wilder and quieter, with red-gold beaches; and the two towns suit anyone who wants restaurants and culture on the doorstep.

A honey-stone old town on the west coast, plus family resorts nearby.

Ciutadella, the island's former capital, is its most romantic town: arcaded streets, palaces and a cathedral of golden stone, and a narrow harbour lined with seafood restaurants where the evening crowd gathers. Some of the finest hotels are in restored palaces facing the port.

The coast around it is full of resorts and coves, from Cala Santandria near town to Cala'n Bosch and Son Xoriguer in the south-west, which are popular with families. The airport is about 45 minutes away.

The capital, on one of the world’s great natural harbours.

Mahón sits above one of the largest natural harbours in the world, its waterfront lined with restaurants and bars and its old town full of Georgian-style houses left by British rule in the 1700s. It's lively, local and only about 10 minutes from the airport.

Stay here for food, culture and harbour views; the nearest beaches are a short drive away.

A long sandy south-coast beach with hotels right on it.

Santo Tomás, in the municipality of Es Migjorn Gran, is a small, peaceful resort on one of the south coast's longest sandy beaches, gently sloping and good for children. It is linked by coastal path to the wilder beaches beyond, and several hotels sit right on the sand.

It has one of the island's most luxurious hotels as well as family favourites.

Inland Mercadal and the wild north coast around Fornells.

Es Mercadal is a pretty inland town known for its food, and its municipality stretches up to the north coast, where the fishing village of Fornells is famous for lobster stew and the beaches are wilder and redder than in the south. The Camí de Cavalls coastal path makes this walking and cycling country.

Stay here for peace, hiking and good food, with both coasts within easy reach.

North or south coast?

South for sandy coves, calm water and family resorts (Santo Tomás, Son Bou, the coves around Ciutadella). North for wilder beaches, quieter villages and hiking. The two towns, Ciutadella and Mahón, are best for food and evenings out.

Getting around

The airport is just outside Mahón, about 10 minutes from town, 20 minutes from Son Bou and 45 minutes from Ciutadella. A hire car is the best way to reach the island’s famous coves.

Questions about where to stay in Menorca

What is the best area to stay in Menorca?
Ciutadella is the best all-rounder, with a beautiful old town and family resorts nearby. Choose Son Bou or Santo Tomás for sandy beaches, Mahón for a city base close to the airport, or the north around Fornells for peace and quiet.
Is Ciutadella or Mahón better to stay in?
Ciutadella is prettier and more romantic, with a medieval old town and more resorts nearby. Mahón is the capital, with a spectacular harbour, more of a local feel and a 10-minute airport transfer.
Where should families stay in Menorca?
Son Bou and Santo Tomás on the south coast have long sandy beaches, and the resorts around Ciutadella, such as Cala’n Bosch, are also popular with families.
Is Menorca quieter than Majorca?
Yes. Menorca is smaller, less developed and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with no big party resorts. It suits families and couples looking for beaches and a slower pace.
