Where to stay in Lanzarote: the best resorts and areas

Lanzarote looks like nowhere else in Europe. Volcanic eruptions in the 1700s left a lunar landscape of black lava fields and rust-red craters, and the artist César Manrique spent his life making sure the island's whitewashed villages stayed low, white and beautiful. Add year-round sunshine and golden beaches, and it is easy to see why so many people come back.

Almost everyone stays in one of three resorts: Puerto del Carmen, the biggest and liveliest; Playa Blanca in the south, newer and more upmarket; or Costa Teguise on the east coast, the quiet one. The airport sits handily between them.

The island's biggest resort: golden beaches and a long promenade.

Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote's original and biggest resort, a 6-km ribbon of golden beaches, including Playa Grande and Playa Chica, backed by a seafront promenade of bars, restaurants and shops. At its western end, the old harbour still has fishing boats and some of the best seafood restaurants on the island.

It has the most going on, from family hotels with big pools to a busy evening strip, and the widest range of places to stay. The airport is only 10 to 15 minutes away.

A smart southern resort near the gorgeous Papagayo beaches.

Playa Blanca, at the southern tip of the island, grew from a fishing village into Lanzarote's most polished resort. Its promenade links Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo with the stylish Marina Rubicon, and Fuerteventura floats on the horizon, close enough to visit by ferry for the day.

The real treasure is the Papagayo beaches just east of town: a string of golden coves in a protected natural park, regularly named the most beautiful on the island. Hotels here lean upmarket, with several big five-star resorts.

The calm east-coast resort, with a sheltered beach and Manrique design.

Costa Teguise is the island's quiet achiever: smaller and calmer than Puerto del Carmen, with a sheltered sandy beach at Las Cucharas, a pleasant little centre and a reputation among windsurfers thanks to the steady breezes.

César Manrique had a hand in the resort's design, including one of its landmark hotels, and it shows in the low-rise, whitewashed look. It suits families and couples who want an easy, relaxed base about 15 minutes from the airport.

An upmarket marina and quiet coast near the volcanoes of Timanfaya.

The municipality of Yaiza covers the island's wild south-west, from the lava fields of Timanfaya National Park to the coast. The highlight for a stay is Puerto Calero, a chic little marina just west of Puerto del Carmen with an adults-only luxury resort, and the quiet seafront of Costa Calero next door.

Inland, the village of Yaiza itself, all white houses and bougainvillea, is one of the prettiest on the island.

The capital: a lagoon harbour, a town beach and local life.

Arrecife, the island's capital, is a working town rather than a resort, but it has its charms: the Charco de San Ginés, a lagoon lined with old fishermen's houses and restaurants, and Playa del Reducto, a sandy town beach with calm, shallow water.

It makes a good-value, local-feeling base, five minutes from the airport, with characterful adults-only hideaways in restored fishermen's houses.

Which resort?

Puerto del Carmen for the most choice, the liveliest evenings and the shortest transfer; Playa Blanca for a smarter feel and the best beaches nearby; Costa Teguise for peace and quiet. Hire a car for a day or two: the volcanoes, caves and Manrique sights are what make Lanzarote special.

Getting there

Lanzarote's airport is on the east coast near Arrecife: about 10 to 15 minutes from Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise, and around 30 to 40 minutes from Playa Blanca.
