Where to stay in Corfu: the best resorts and areas

Corfu is the greenest of the Greek islands: olive groves tumble down to the sea, cypress trees spike the hillsides, and the water shifts from emerald to deep Ionian blue. Venetian and British rule left an old town of elegant arcades in Corfu Town, but most visitors come for the coast, a ring of resorts that each have a very distinct personality.

Broadly, the north-east is pretty, upmarket and calm; the north coast has long, shallow beaches for families; the east coast near Corfu Town is convenient and lively; and the far south, at Kavos, is where the island lets its hair down.

A picturesque harbour village with coves and views to the mainland.

Kassiopi might be the prettiest resort on Corfu: a horseshoe harbour of fishing boats and waterfront tavernas on the north-east coast, with a ruined castle on the headland and the mountains of the mainland looming across a narrow strait.

The beaches are small pebble-and-shingle coves, with clear water perfect for snorkelling, and Avlaki, a Blue Flag beach, is just round the corner. It is calm, characterful and popular with couples and returning families.

Sandy coves, sculpted cliffs and a cheerful resort strip.

Sidari, on the north-west coast, is famous for the Canal d'Amour, a set of sandstone rocks carved by the sea into channels and coves, which legend says brings lasting love to couples who swim through. The main beach is long and sandy with plenty of water sports.

The resort itself is lively, with a strip of bars and restaurants that stays busy in summer, but you can easily find quieter apartments on its edges.

A long, shallow north-coast beach and a relaxed village.

Acharavi has one of the longest beaches on Corfu, a sweep of sand and fine shingle along the north coast where the water stays shallow for a long way out: ideal for children. The village behind it is easy-going and green, with tavernas and a few bars rather than a nightlife scene.

It is a good pick for families who want space and calm, and it has one of the island's few five-star beach resorts nearby.

A long east-coast beach close to the airport and Corfu Town.

Dassia stretches along one of the prettiest parts of the east coast, a long beach backed by olive-clad hills about 11 km north of Corfu Town. It has a good mix of tavernas, bars and water sports without being rowdy.

The big plus is location: the airport is roughly 15 minutes away, and Corfu Town's old streets make an easy evening out.

A sheltered bay and marina, ten minutes from Corfu Town.

Gouvia wraps around the calm, almost lake-like Govino Bay, home to one of Greece's biggest marinas. It is a practical, friendly resort roughly 9 km from Corfu Town and about 11 km from the airport, with tavernas along the water and a small beach.

Stay here if you want to explore the island by car or boat and spend evenings in Corfu Town rather than on a party strip.

A fishing village on the east coast, close to Corfu Town.

Benitses is an old fishing village squeezed between wooded hills and the sea, 11 km south of Corfu Town. Narrow lanes lead up from a small harbour and beach, and the grand Achilleion Palace, built for Empress Sisi of Austria, is a pleasant walk away.

It is quieter than it once was, with beachfront hotels, a luxury spa resort and family-run places right by the water.

Moraitika, on the east coast south of Benitses, has a long beach with shallow, clear water that families love, and an old hill village above with tavernas and a slower pace. Down by the beach there is enough going on in the evenings to keep teenagers happy.

Corfu's party capital, at the island's southern tip.

Kavos, at the southern tip of the island, is Corfu's answer to Ibiza: a long strip of bars, clubs and fast-food joints that's packed with young groups every summer. If that's what you're after, it delivers.

Its saving grace for everyone else is the beach, long, sandy and shallow, and the quieter bays and the Asprokavos coastline just beyond the resort.

Which part of Corfu?

North-east for scenery and calm (Kassiopi); north coast for long, shallow family beaches (Acharavi, Sidari); east coast for convenience to the airport and Corfu Town (Dassia, Gouvia, Benitses, Moraitika); the far south for partying (Kavos).

Getting around

Corfu airport is just outside Corfu Town, so the east-coast resorts are 15 to 30 minutes away, while Kassiopi, Sidari and Kavos take around an hour. Roads are winding: hiring a car is the best way to see the island's hidden coves.
