Where to stay in Barbados: the best areas and hotels

Barbados wears its Britishness lightly: there is cricket, driving on the left and afternoon tea if you want it, but mostly there is rum punch, flying fish and some of the finest beaches in the Caribbean. The island is small enough to cross in an hour, yet each coast has its own personality, and choosing the right one makes all the difference.

The west coast, nicknamed the Platinum Coast, has calm, glassy water, golden sand and the island's most elegant hotels, with Holetown at its heart. The south coast is breezier, livelier and better value, with St Lawrence Gap's bars and the Friday fish fry at Oistins. Bridgetown and Carlisle Bay sit between the two, and the wild Atlantic east is for drives, surfers and dramatic views.

Calm water, golden sand and the island’s most elegant hotels.

The parish of St James is Barbados at its most polished. On this sheltered west coast the Caribbean is calm and clear, perfect for swimming with turtles at Paynes Bay, and the sand is golden and soft. Holetown, where the first English settlers landed, is its lively little hub, with a few streets of restaurants, rum shops and a smart shopping centre.

Hotels here are classic Barbados: gracious, beachfront and impeccably run, from old-school colonial charmers in tropical gardens to all-inclusives that welcome families. Sunsets are the main entertainment. The airport is around 30 to 45 minutes away.

The quiet end of the Platinum Coast, with intimate hideaways.

North of Holetown, the west coast gets sleepier and even prettier. Speightstown is an old trading port with weathered colonial buildings and a local feel, and the coast around it is fringed with quiet bays, small luxury hotels and beachfront homes.

This is the place for couples and anyone who wants peace: intimate hotels in lush gardens, adults-only hideaways on the hillside and sweeping sea views. You will be a little further from the airport and the south coast's nightlife, which is exactly the point.

A sheltered bay of shipwrecks and turtles, beside the historic capital.

Carlisle Bay is a broad sweep of white sand right next to Bridgetown, the capital, whose old centre and garrison are UNESCO-listed. The bay's calm water hides several shipwrecks, and snorkelling among turtles and tropical fish here is one of the island's great free pleasures.

Just south, Hastings and Rockley are linked by a seafront boardwalk that is perfect for an early-morning stroll, with beach bars and cafés along the way. It is a central base for exploring both coasts, and the airport is about 20 minutes away.

Breezy beaches, lively bars and the Oistins fish fry.

The south coast is where Barbados lets its hair down. St Lawrence Gap is a short strip of restaurants, bars and live music, with Dover Beach on its doorstep, and every Friday night the fishing village of Oistins becomes one big street party, with grilled fish, rum and dancing.

The beaches here are broad and sandy, with a little more breeze and surf than the west, and a good choice of all-inclusive resorts for families and couples, including a couples-only resort on Dover Beach. Prices are generally lower than on the Platinum Coast, and the airport is only about 10 minutes away.

Pink-tinged sand, Atlantic rollers and clifftop resorts.

Round the corner from the airport, the south-east coast faces the Atlantic, and the scenery gets wilder. Crane Beach is the showstopper, a cove of pinkish sand below cliffs, with waves rolling in over a protective reef. Further along, St Philip's clifftops hold big resorts beside a 19th-century castle.

It is quieter and more dramatic than the south coast, the sea is livelier, and the resorts have big pools for days when the waves are up. The airport is about 10 minutes away. Keep a car or a driver handy if you plan to go out to eat.
