Where to stay in the Algarve: the best towns and resorts

The Algarve is Portugal's sunny southern edge: 150-odd kilometres of golden cliffs, sea caves and beaches, with fishing towns, golf courses and some of the freshest grilled sardines you'll ever eat. It has been a British favourite for decades, and it still delivers.

Broadly, the central Algarve around Albufeira and Vilamoura is the busiest, with big resorts, nightlife and golf. The west, around Lagos and Sagres, is wilder and more dramatic, with the famous rock formations and surf. The east, towards Tavira, is gentler, with long sandy islands and a more traditional pace.
