Fuerteventura is all about the beaches, and it has the best in the Canaries: kilometre after kilometre of white and golden sand, turquoise water and dunes that look as if they blew in from the Sahara. The landscape inland is stark and volcanic; the coast is where the magic happens.

The island is long and thin, so where you stay decides which beaches you can walk to. Corralejo in the north has the famous dunes; Caleta de Fuste is close to the airport; and the south, at Costa Calma and Jandía, has the longest, emptiest sands of all.

A lively harbour town beside a vast park of white dunes.

Corralejo, at the island's northern tip, is its liveliest town: a fishing harbour turned resort, with a buzzing old quarter of bars and restaurants and a seafront promenade. On its doorstep is the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park, a sweep of white sand dunes and beaches that runs for kilometres along the coast.

Boats leave the harbour for the tiny island of Lobos and for Lanzarote, which you can see across the water. The airport is about 30 to 40 minutes away.

A calm, sheltered bay and marina close to the airport.

Caleta de Fuste, on the east coast, is built around a sheltered, crescent-shaped bay with a golden beach and calm water that suits young children. A small marina, an old watchtower and a couple of golf courses round things off.

Its big advantage is location: the airport is only around 10 minutes away.

Long, shallow white-sand beaches on the south of the island.

Costa Calma, at the start of the Jandía peninsula, is named for its calm, shallow waters. A long beach of fine white sand runs in front of a low-key resort of hotels set among palm groves, with lagoons forming at low tide further south.

It is quiet and relaxed, with several beachfront hotels, including adults-only options.

Over 20 km of white sand at the southern tip of the island.

The Jandía peninsula has some of the longest beaches in Europe: over 20 km of white sand and turquoise water stretching along the south-east coast. Playa de Jandía runs past the lighthouse to Morro Jable, an old fishing village with a harbour, a promenade and good seafood.

Hotels here range from big family resorts to some of the island's best five-stars, many right on the sand. It is the furthest area from the airport, around an hour or more.

Inland north, with surf stays and boutique villas.

La Oliva is the inland municipality behind Corralejo, a land of old villages, volcanic cones and surf culture. It is home to laid-back surf hostels and small adults-only guesthouses close to the north-coast breaks, as well as boutique villas with private pools.

North, middle or south?

North (Corralejo) for dunes, a lively town and day trips to Lobos and Lanzarote. Middle (Caleta de Fuste) for calm water and a short transfer. South (Costa Calma, Jandía) for the longest, emptiest beaches and big resorts. Fuerteventura is windy, which is great for surfers and kitesurfers; sheltered bays like Caleta de Fuste are calmer.

Getting around

The airport is on the east coast near Puerto del Rosario: about 10 minutes from Caleta de Fuste, 30 to 40 minutes from Corralejo, and an hour or more to Costa Calma and Jandía.
