Where to stay in Cancun: the best areas and resorts

Cancun is the Caribbean turned up to eleven. The sea really is that shade of turquoise, the sand is fine and white and stays cool underfoot, and a long, skinny strip of resorts curves between the ocean and a mangrove lagoon. It is famous for all-inclusives and spring-break nights, but it is also the launch pad for Mayan ruins, jungle swimming holes called cenotes and a couple of the loveliest little islands in Mexico.

The big decision is how much buzz you want. The Hotel Zone has the beaches, the nightlife and the biggest choice of resorts. Playa Mujeres, just north of the city, is newer, calmer and built for long days by the pool. And if you want to escape altogether, Isla Mujeres is a short ferry ride away, and car-free Holbox a few hours up the coast.

The Hotel Zone is what most people picture when they say Cancun: a long sandbar shaped like a number seven, with the Caribbean on one side, the Nichupté Lagoon on the other and resorts lined up shoulder to shoulder along the beach. The short top of the seven faces Isla Mujeres and has the calmest water; the long eastern side has wider beaches and bigger, bluer waves.

At the corner, Punta Cancún is the Party Center, a cluster of clubs, bars and shows that draws a young, loud crowd late into the night. South of it, the mood turns resort-focused, with adults-only hideaways and family all-inclusives, shopping malls and lagoon-side restaurants. The airport is around 15 to 25 minutes from most hotels.

North of downtown, beyond the ferry port, a newer stretch of coast faces Isla Mujeres across a calm, shallow channel. Playa Mujeres is a gated resort area with a golf course, about 10 minutes from downtown, and Costa Mujeres runs on beyond it, about half an hour from the airport.

The resorts here are big, modern and made for staying put: vast pool complexes, water parks for children, adults-only resorts for couples and, crucially, a beach you share with far fewer people than in the Hotel Zone. You trade nightlife for peace; the Party Center is a taxi ride away if you change your mind.

A slow little island of golf carts, beach bars and romantic hideaways.

Isla Mujeres is just a short ferry ride from Cancun, but it feels a world away. The island is long, narrow and small enough to explore by golf cart, with a colourful little town at the northern tip, the glassy shallows of Playa Norte beside it and wild cliffs at Punta Sur at the other end.

The most romantic resorts sit along the quieter southern half: couples-only all-inclusives, an intimate hotel where guests arrive by private yacht and an adults-only resort built into the rocky shore. Day-trippers come over from Cancun by the boatload, then leave you to the sunset.

Car-free, barefoot and blissfully slow, where the Gulf meets the Caribbean.

Holbox is what Cancun looked like before Cancun. This sliver of an island off the north-east tip of the Yucatán has sandy streets instead of roads, golf carts instead of cars, a village of painted murals and hammock bars, and a long beach where the water stays shallow for what feels like miles. Flamingos wade at Punta Mosquito, and in summer boats head out to swim with whale sharks.

Hotels are small and personal, from barefoot boutique places with rooftop pools to a few spa resorts with private beaches and some adults-only stays. Getting there takes a few hours by road from Cancun, then a ferry from Chiquilá, so give it at least three nights.

Which area?

First time, want everything on tap? The Hotel Zone. A family all-inclusive with space and calm water? Playa Mujeres. Romance? Isla Mujeres. Getting away from it all? Holbox. Fancy Playa del Carmen or Tulum instead? They are on the Riviera Maya, roughly an hour or more south of the airport.

Getting there and around

There are direct flights from the UK to Cancun airport, which sits south of the Hotel Zone. Buses run the length of the Hotel Zone day and night, and ferries leave for Isla Mujeres from the Hotel Zone and from Puerto Juárez. Seaweed called sargassum can wash up on Caribbean beaches in late spring and summer, so ask your hotel how it handles it.
