Where to stay in Zante: the best resorts and areas

Zante does drama better than almost any Greek island. On the west coast, sheer white cliffs plunge into water so blue it looks retouched, and a rusting wreck lies marooned on the sands of Navagio, the most photographed beach in Greece. In the north, boats nose into the sea-carved Blue Caves; in the south, loggerhead turtles haul themselves onto the beaches of Laganas Bay to lay their eggs, as they have for millions of years.

Almost all the resorts sit on the gentler east and south coasts, within half an hour of the airport and Zakynthos Town. The big choice is between Laganas, the island's party strip, and everywhere else: Tsilivi for families and hillside luxury, Argassi for a relaxed base close to town, and Kalamaki for peace beside the turtle beaches.

A long sandy bay by day, the loudest strip in the Ionian by night.

Laganas has a reputation, and the main strip lives up to it: a mile or so of bars, clubs and fast-food joints that pulses all night in high summer, packed with young groups who came here to dance. If that's what you want, nowhere in Greece does it better.

But the beach itself is a stunner, a long, wide curve of golden sand on Laganas Bay, part of the National Marine Park and a nesting ground for loggerhead turtles, so parts are off-limits at night. Away from the strip, there's a beachfront resort styled like a traditional Ionian village, a family hotel with sea views across the bay, an adults-only hotel close to the action, and a quieter hotel 300 metres from the sand. The airport is only about 3 km away.

Tsilivi, on the north-east coast about 6 km from Zakynthos Town, is the island's best all-rounder. The bay is sandy and shallow, the water is calm and clear, and the resort strikes a happy balance: enough tavernas, bars and water sports to fill a fortnight, none of the excess of Laganas.

It's also where Zante keeps its smartest hotels, perched in the olive groves on the hills behind the beach with views across the Ionian. Pick an all-suite hotel in an olive grove, its adults-only sister next door, a cluster of villas each with a private pool and garden, or a hotel on a sandy bay on the edge of the resort.

A relaxed resort a few minutes from Zakynthos Town.

Argassi spreads along the coast just south of Zakynthos Town, under the green slopes of Mount Skopos. The beach is narrower than Laganas or Tsilivi, but the resort makes up for it with a lively main road of tavernas and bars, a low-key nightlife scene and a superb location: the town's harbour, squares and Venetian-era churches are about 3 km away, and the wild beaches of the Vasilikos peninsula are a short drive south.

Hotels include a resort in palm-shaded gardens, a modern hotel 200 metres from the beach, a hotel set right on the sand, and another close to the popular Vasilikos beaches.

A peaceful beach on the turtles’ doorstep, close to the airport.

Kalamaki sits at the eastern end of Laganas Bay, a few kilometres from the party but in a different world. Its fine-sand beach is part of the National Marine Park and one of the places the loggerhead turtles return to each year, so it closes at night and the evenings are quiet and dark. The village has a handful of tavernas and bars, and Zakynthos Town is about 6 km away.

The airport is very close, so expect the occasional plane overhead. In return you get easy transfers and good-value stays: a boutique hotel where every room is designed differently, a hotel 150 metres from the turtle beach, a beach hotel beside the marine park, and a hotel in palm and olive gardens 90 metres from the sea.

Which area?

Party holiday? Laganas, no question. Young children and a gentle beach? Tsilivi. Romance and an infinity pool? The hills above Tsilivi. A base for exploring and evenings in town? Argassi. Peace, turtles and a short transfer? Kalamaki.

Getting around

The airport is just outside Laganas and Kalamaki, and no main resort is more than about half an hour away. Navagio and the Blue Caves are best seen by boat: trips leave from several resorts and from Zakynthos Town. Hire a car or quad for a day to explore the mountain villages and the west coast viewpoints.

Questions about where to stay in Zante

What is the best area to stay in Zante?
Tsilivi is the best all-round choice, with a calm sandy bay, a friendly resort and some of the island’s best hotels. Choose Laganas for nightlife, Argassi to be close to Zakynthos Town, or Kalamaki for a quiet stay.
Where should families stay in Zante?
Tsilivi, on the north-east coast, is the best family resort, with a shallow, sandy beach and plenty of family hotels. Kalamaki is a good quieter alternative.
Is Zante the same as Zakynthos?
Yes. Zakynthos is the Greek name for the island and Zante is the traditional Italian-derived name widely used in the UK. Zakynthos Town is the island’s capital and main port.
Where is the nightlife in Zante?
Laganas has the island’s famous party strip, with bars and clubs open until dawn in summer. Argassi and Tsilivi have livelier bars but a much more relaxed scene.
Can you see turtles in Zante?
Yes. Loggerhead turtles nest on the beaches of Laganas Bay, including Laganas and Kalamaki, which are part of the National Marine Park. Some beaches close at night to protect the nests, and boat trips from the bay often spot turtles in the water.
